Weight loss drug use could surge after Wegovy’s daily pill approval

Weight loss drug use in Australia could surge by 40 per cent with a daily pill now approved as an alternative to weekly injections.

The pill contains the same appetite-suppressing ingredient found in Ozempic and Wegovy but is taken once a day on an empty stomach instead of requiring a weekly injection.

Approved by Australia’s drug regulator, the TGA, the medication will be available in chemists before the end of the year.

“For some people who hate the idea of an injection, this will just be a game changer,” general practitioner Dr Ginni Mansberg said.

However, she warned the side effects remain similar to the injection form.

“Efficacy is roughly similar. Side effects, sadly similar. It would be lovely if we got rid of those,” Mansberg said.

More than 500,000 Australians are believed to be taking weight loss jabs every month, including mum of two Linzi Ibrahim, who struggled with her weight for years.

She’s lost 15 kilos in 12 months on Wegovy.

“It’s so much easier to play with the kids. My blood pressure’s lower. My asthma’s improved,” Ibrahim said.

Pharmacists predict the pill could see weight loss drug use jump by up to 40 per cent.

“It’s just wonderful to have more options,” one pharmacist said.

The cost remains unknown, but in America the pill costs between US$150 to US$300 a month, slightly cheaper than the injection.

There are calls for it to be added to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, particularly for those at greatest risk.

Doctors stress the medication is for those living with serious obesity, diabetes and heart problems, not to help thin people get thinner.
